The fourth day, darkness had overwhelmed the miners. It was hot, as if coals and other metals had been already heated to a boiling temperature. About 10 miners present, they toiled long and hard into the evening.
Dusted with soot and whatnot, the once pale, white skin the miners had were colored in an obsidian black.

"I don't think we can take much longer of this," one miner said. His name was Johnson. His tattered collar kept interrupting him as he mined.

One of the other miners called out to Johnson. "Maybe if you hadn't brought your god damn sweater, you wouldn't be complaining. Jesus, how do you live in this thing?"

"Hey, watch what you're doing before you get killed," Johnson said.

"Oh why you little-"

"Johnson, Jackson, shut the fuck up and do what you're supposed to do!" The foreman called angrily. He was a tall, grotesque fellow, who could never seem to stop sweating, even in the dead of winter.
His bright orange hard hat was tarnished and dull. He was not particularly bright, but had been assigned the leader of the miners, a job which he obviously disliked. "C'mon, pussies, get your work done.
We're at 106 yards as of now, just two more, and we'll be finished with our work here."

Jackson scoffed. He had a very impatient attitude.

Everyday, the miners had to wake up early to get to the mines.They had been set with the '108 mark,' a project in which they had to travel a certain amount of yards to gather various minerals.They had made consider-
able progress, and reached the 100 yard mark under the course of three days. It was the last stretch, a desperate effort to return to the surface.

"Stop." Everybody froze. Tension hung in the air, like an ominous signal. Sweat gently rolled down the miners cheeks, leaving a trail of pink flesh beneath the blackened skin.Eyes turned to the foreman for direction.

"Congratulations, to all of you," He droned, " you have just completed the '108 yard' Challenge!" even under his bored expression there was a feeling of relief.

Cheers flooded the narrow space. Miners took off their hard hats and wiped the sweat on their face, to cool off.

"Thank God, I thought we wouldn't make it out of here," Johnson said.

"No need for reflection, lets just get the bloody hell out!" Jackson said hastily.

After a few words of praise, and a commemorative photo taken, they would finally arise to the surface, to see their loved ones, united once more.
