feeling creatively stuck?

Well, this is the unsticking place. You'll find a new visual or random-words inspiration every single day just for artists, writers, and the terminally creative. Once you've scared away The Block, post your work in the comments or leave a link for us to visit. Let's start a creative pandemic.

Block Party: submission guidelines

Sunday, June 27, 2010

... a large public party in which many members of a single neighborhood congregate, either to observe an event of some importance or simply for mutual enjoyment.
                                                                                 Wikipedia, "block party"

Welcome to the Block Party, Easy Street's online magazine of writing and art.  Maybe you're a blog carnival professional. Maybe you don't know exactly what I'm talking about. Either way, you should join the fun.

It's easy. This blog carnival is a monthly collection  and celebration of the best writing and art submitted to Easy Street. Those who would like their pieces/posts considered will submit them by midnight CST on the final Friday of every month. I'll chose the best and brightest from these submissions and post them with links and commentary the following Sunday. This format allows you to be seen by a larger artistic and literary community, as to share in the glory of others' talent.

What sort of thing are we looking for? Stunning writing. Freshness. Art that makes us want to pull out our credit cards. I've always believed that the best inspiration is someone else's creative excellence. We feed off of others' energy. Because the sky is the limit and everyone should be creatively fearless, there is no "theme." Just submit your best, most carefully crafted and edited work. Push yourself and go for broke.

Guidelines:

1. You may submit only one piece/post per month, per blog. The submission link is HERE.

2. Enter your work in the appropriate category/genre. Noncategorized pieces will not be considered. Pieces must be your original writing, art, or photography and not compilations of other people's work found on the internet. Here are the categories/genres:
  • Poetry
  • Fiction (over 1,000 words)
  • Nonfiction / Creative Nonfiction
  • Flash Fiction (up to 1,000 words)
  • Art - original art of any kind
  • Photography - original photos only, no "how to" articles
  • Genre Bender (for those pieces that defy or mix previously stated genres)
  • Note: We do not take novel excerpts at this time. If your chapter is a complete fiction or creative nonfiction piece, you're more than welcome to submit it as such.
3. Be clear about the category in which you submit. For example, only submit poems in the "Poetry" category, not a "how-to" piece on writing poetry or a "50 Best Sites" list of links.

4. In fact, any submission that begins with "50 Best..." or "100 Best..." will almost certainly not be considered. The focus here is art and writing, not link exchange. So there.

4. If you are chosen for the monthly magazine, you agree to post a link to Easy Street's Block Party, as well as to the carnival submission link within seven days of the Block Party carnival posting.

5. Being selected does not disqualify you from submitting the next month. Or every month.

6. You retain all rights to your work. Each piece chosen will include a link to the original post. No work will be posted in its entirety on Easy Street without permission.

DEADLINE:  The last Friday of every month, 12 p.m. CST.
